What Causes Automotive Paint to Fade and How Can You Fix It?
Automotive paint can lose colour and gloss over time because of UV exposure, weather, contaminants, poor maintenance and deterioration of the coating system. The condition of the existing paint determines whether it can be restored or needs refinishing.
Common Causes of Fading
- Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
- Oxidation and deterioration of the coating.

- Inadequate washing and paint protection.
- Damage or failure of the clear coat.
How to Prevent Fading
Wash the vehicle with products intended for automotive paint, remove contaminants promptly and use suitable paint protection. Whenever practical, sheltered parking can reduce prolonged UV exposure.
Can Faded Paint Be Repaired?
Light oxidation may respond to appropriate cleaning and polishing, but heavily faded, peeling or damaged coatings may require sanding and refinishing. Do not polish through a remaining clear coat simply to improve appearance.
