A suitable primer is important where bare metal or repairs are exposed. Primer improves adhesion, helps isolate filler repairs and gives the colour coat a more even base. If the wheel surface is already coated and uniformly sanded, you may only need spot priming on repairs rather than priming the entire wheel.

For colour, wheel-specific aerosols are common because they are simple to apply and available in popular finishes.
